Restorative Practices build social capital through a network of practices including: fair process, applying a philosophy and practice of relationship building- primarily through a desire to do things with people and not to, for or neglecting them. By bringing awareness to feelings, affect and the applications of various communication techniques, Restorative Practices (RP) has developed application and research based interventions in “education, counseling, criminal justice, social work and organizational management” (Wachtel, 2013).
Ripple Community Inc. (RCI) has completed our first series of community meetings. We had invited the local community to attend six weekly 2 hour gatherings. The sessions were organized as follows: check-in, short training on an RP-related skill, circles, reflection, snack/fellowship. The participants applied their learning in a hands-on application/circle time and then all the groups gathered for a time of socialization/reflection over a snack that the groups took turns preparing. We have learned, laughed, practiced and celebrated together. We invite You to be a part of RCI. We need each other... you have skills, talents and connections to bring to the community.
RCI is looking forward to our next community gathering. Stay in touch here for more information.
The goal for for this blog is for this format to be a forum for those who are interested to explore the process of introducing Restorative Practices in an urban setting - to examine how to best introduce the skills and encourage the practice in the community and lives of those involved.
