Week two of Ripple Community Inc.’s community RP training began with a group of around 11-- 6 participants and 5 facilitators--responding to a check in question. The group reviewed norms/rules that were developed the previous week. A discussion developed about how to encourage reminders and group accountability related to the ground rules. The group decided on first talking to the person directly, then, if needed, bringing the concern to the group with the goal of all participants taking responsibility for their feelings and actions.
The compass of shame was introduced and then the affect continuum, from joy to dissmell, was presented. There was not as much clarity about these concepts as there was with the social discipline window. The group reviewed and discussed where they had experienced or encountered each of the four quadrants of the social justice window in their lives during the previous week. It seemed as though the hardest quadrant to express was the “for” box. The group participated in a check out question and fellowship, sharing a snack that the participants take turns providing.
Questions/Thoughts:
-What might have been the reason for the decline in the number of participants from week one to week two (from twelve to six or seven)?
- How can we present the ideas incorporated in the compass (how do we express negative emotions and how do our emotions effect how we treat ourselves and others?) of shame in a way that is more accessible in our context?
-Why do you think it might be harder for participants to express their interactions in the “for” box in the social justice window?
